The Team

All of the doctors in our group are Consultant Anaesthetists based at St. Richard's Hospital, with close established links to both NHS and private practice in the area. Our consultants are fully accredited with the Royal College of Anaesthetists, maintaining the highest standards of professional training, experience and development. This enables us to provide the highest levels of care during your stay in hospital.


All of our consultants provide anaesthesia for the main surgical specialities, including Orthopaedics, Urology, Gynaecology, Bariatrics, Colorectal, Ophthalmology, Plastics, Maxillofacial and General Surgery.

Dr Sharon Avery
BSc BM FRCA ME

Dr Avery graduated from The University of Southampton in 1997. She completed her Anaesthetic specialty training in Wessex, and has been a Consultant Anaesthetist since 2012 at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester.

 

Her specialist areas of anaesthesia interest include Regional Anaesthesia for awake hand surgery, and Preoperative Assessment of the high risk patient.

Dr Lucy Barnes
BM BSc FRCA

Dr Barnes graduated from The University of Southampton in 2008, having previously completed a degree in Chemistry with a career in pharmaceuticals. She completed her Anaesthetic specialty training in South East England, and has been a Consultant Anaesthetist since 2022 at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester.


Her specialist areas of anaesthesia interest include Difficult Airways and Obstetrics.

Dr Mark Bentley
MBBS FRCA

Dr Bentley graduated from St George’s Hospital Medical School, London in 1991. He completed his Anaesthetic specialty training in London and South East England, and has been a Consultant Anaesthetist since 2002 at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester.


His specialist areas of anaesthesia interest include Bariatrics and Obstetrics. 


He is the current Chair of Chichester Anaesthetists LLP, Anaesthetic representative on MAC of Chichester Nuffield Hospital, and Deputy Chair of the UHSussex Local Negotiating Committee.

Dr Emily Dana
MB BA Hons Oxon FRCAA

Dr Dana graduated from Oxford University in 1997. She completed her Anaesthetic specialty training in South Thames, London, and was a Consultant Anaesthetist for 3 years at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, London.


Dr Dana has been a Consultant Anaesthetist at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester since 2010.


Her specialist areas of anaesthesia interest include Gynaecology, Bariatrics, Preoperative Assessment of the high risk patient. She is the Preoperative Lead at St Richard’s Hospital.  

Dr Justin Dickens
MBChB FRCA FFICM

Dr Dickens graduated from Birmingham Medical School in 1994. He completed his Anaesthetic specialty training in London, South East England and Sydney, Australia. He has been a Consultant Anaesthetist since 2005 at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester.


His specialist areas of anaesthesia interest include Bariatrics, Colorectal and Critical Care, and is the current Clinical Lead for St Richard’s Hospital Anaesthesia department. 

Dr Cathryn Eitel
MBChB FRCA PgCert Leadership LCS level2a

Dr Eitel graduated from The University of Edinburgh in 1996. She completed her Anaesthetic specialty training in South East Scotland and London, and has been a Consultant Anaesthetist since 2011 at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester.


Her specialist areas of anaesthesia interest include Orthopaedics, Enhanced Recovery after Surgery, and is the Clinical Lead for Chichester and Worthing Enhanced Recovery Programme for elective Orthopaedics.


Trustee board member of the National Preoperative Association since 2022 and secretary (2022 to date). 

Dr Robert Hill
MBBS FRCA

Dr Hill graduated from St George’s Hospital Medical School, London, in 1990. He completed his Anaesthetic specialty training in London and South East England and was Visiting Associate Professor in Anaesthesiology at Duke University Medical Centre, North Carolina, USA 1997-1998. He has been a Consultant Anaesthetist since 2000 at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester.


His specialist areas of anaesthesia interest include Bariatrics and Preoperative Assessment of the high-risk patient. Trustee board member of the National Preoperative Association since 2009, President (2013-14 & 2021-22) and immediate Past President (2023-25). 

Dr Rajeev Jeevananthan
MBBS BSc (Joint Hons) FRCA RCPathME

Dr Jeevananthan graduated from Norwich Medical School in 2007. He completed his Anaesthetic specialty training in Kent, Sussex, and London and has been a Consultant Anaesthetist since 2021 at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester.


His specialist areas of anaesthesia interest include Regional anaesthesia and Obstetrics, and is currently completing his European Diploma of Regional Anaesthesia.

Dr Matt Klulowski
MD EDAIC

Dr Klulowski graduated from Medical University of Warsaw, Poland in 2013. He completed his Anaesthetic specialty training at Infant Jesus Teaching Hospital in Warsaw in 2020. Appointed as anaesthetic fellow in Bariatric Surgery 2021-22, and Consultant Anaesthetist since 2023 at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester.


His specialist areas of anaesthesia interest include Bariatrics and Regional Anaesthesia.

Dr Tim Martindale
MBBS FRCA FFICM FFMLM MInstRE

Dr Martindale graduated from Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Medical School, London in 2007. He completed his Anaesthetic specialty training in Wessex, and has been a Consultant Anaesthetist since 2017 at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester.


His specialist areas of anaesthesia interest include Critical Care, and Clinical Director for Surgery and Ophthalmology (2019-25).

Dr Philip McDonald
MBChB FRCA FFICM

Dr McDonald graduated from Liverpool Medical School in 1984. He completed his Anaesthetic specialty training in Liverpool, Oxford, Royal Perth and Adelaide Children’s Hospitals, Australia. He has been a Consultant Anaesthetist since 1996 at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester.


His specialist areas of anaesthesia interest include Paediatrics and Bariatrics. He is Medical Director and Trustee for Operation Smile UK. He travels to developing countries annually as a volunteer and provides anaesthesia for life changing surgery for children with cleft lips and palates.

Dr Philip McGlone
MBBS BSc MCEM FRCA FFICM

Dr McGlone graduated from St George’s Hospital Medical School, London in 2005. He completed his Anaesthetic specialty training in Wessex, and has been a Consultant Anaesthetist since 2017 at St. Richard’s Hospital, Chichester.


His specialist area of interest is Critical Care and is the current Clinical lead for Intensive Care at St Richard’s Hospital. 


Dr Ruth Prosser
MBBS FRCA

Dr Prosser graduated from Guy’s Hospital, London in 1992. She completed her Anaesthetic specialty training in London and South East England, and has been a Consultant Anaesthetist since 2003 at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester.


Her specialist areas of anaesthesia interest include Bariatrics, Gynaecology and Colorectal.

Dr Rajesh Shankar
MBBS FRCA FFPM FCA

Dr Shankar graduated from St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College, London in 1985. He completed his Anaesthetic specialty training in South East London, and was a Consultant Anaesthetist at St Bartholomew’s and The London Hospital for 2 years. He has been a Consultant Anaesthetist since 2003 at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester.


His specialist area of anaesthesia interest is Chronic Pain Medicine.

Dr Christopher Smith
MBBS FRCA

Dr Smith graduated from The London Hospital Medical College in 1983. He completed his Anaesthetic specialty training in London and Birmingham, and was Visiting Associate Professor in Anaesthesiology at Duke University Medical Centre, North Carolina, USA.


He retired from the NHS in 2023 having been a Consultant Anaesthetist since 1995 at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester. He continues to provide anaesthetics in the private sector.

As Consultant Anaesthetists we first trained in medicine (5 years), worked as junior doctors (2 years minimum) and then completed specialist training in Anaesthesia (at least 7 years)
